It is without a doubt that Michael Corbett at Vanguardist is one seriously talented winemaker and arguably currently producing the greatest Grenache in the country. We sat down a few days ago and tried his Pre-Release 2021 Grenache from Blewitt Springs, his drop dead gorgeous 2021 Mourvèdre and strikingly beautiful 2022 Dry Rose. Needless to say the wines were incredible, and we agree with Michael when he says the 2021 Grenache is the finest he has ever made. A hard call given how good previous releases have been. The 2021 Mourvèdre also pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved in this country with this Southern French grape variety.
There’s something about Michael’s wines that is hard to pin down, a certain 'je ne sais quoi’, which all of the great wines of the world possess. They all express immense character and righteousness and for wine anoraks who like to look further, the craftsmanship and especially tannin management is extraordinary.
