Ochota Barrels is based in the Basket Range, in the cool high altitude climate of Adelaide Hills. Taras and Amber Ochota conceived of Ochota Barrels as a way to produce small batch super premium single vineyard wines sourced from magnificent old vineyard sites in McLaren Vale, Barossa and Adelaide Hills. The vineyards are generally picked early, chasing energy, intensity and purity in the wines over sheer power, weight and concentration. Both are accomplished winemakers who have travelled and worked in California, Italy and Sweden. In Australia Taras worked at Two Hands and Nepenthe. Their winemaking approach is minimalist. Hand harvested fruit is partially whole bunch basket pressed, fermented with native yeast, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. After Taras' untimely passing, his wife Amber is proudly at the helm, continuing to make the style of wines that have developed a cult following. These are idiosyncratic and delicious examples of what can be achieved in Australia through creative yet attentive winemaking. They are quietly complex, highly sought after and hence extremely limited.
