Although Stanko Radikon sadly passed away from cancer a few years ago, he has left behind a formidable legacy of international renown for his complex ‘natural' or 'orange wines'. That legacy is continued today by his son Sasa.
The winery is situated near the border of Slovenia at the town of Oslavia in the Isonzo area of Fruili. Winemaking techniques at Radikon predate how wine was made in the area before World War One and include extended skin maceration, fermentation in large old barrels with no temperature control, extended maturation for many years before release, no additives like commercial yeast or enzymes, and very tiny or no sulpher additions. Trying a Radikon wine for the first time can be a wicked baptismal and quite an exhilaration, especially for wine lovers unfamiliar with the unconventional style.
The vineyard is 11 hectares planted tightly at between 6500 and 10000 vines per hectare. It includes Ribolla Gialla, Merlot, Tocai Friulano and Pinot Grigio. No chemicals or synthetics are used in the Radikon vineyard and yields are very low at 2.25 tons per acre.
These are true pioneering wines in the organic and natural wine paradigm that are wild and beautiful with considerable long term ageing capacity. They are also rare and today enjoy international cult status like other producers including Josko Gravner and Edi Kante.
Stanko may no longer be with us, but his maverick spirit lives on in his Radikon wines.
