Many wine lovers around Australia and the world are looking to reduce their sugar intake, but still love a glass of wine.

When thinking about sugar content and calories, the key term is ‘Residual Sugar’ or RS. It’s a term used in the wine industry to measure the sugar content and thus sweetness of wine and is expressed in grams per litre (g/L). The bad news is that Residual Sugar does not need to be stated on the label and finding the real number can be quite tricky. Even for people like us who work in the wine business.

For those seeking out low sugar wines or who are on a Keto diet, it’s important to choose wines that are ‘dry’, and we define wine as dry if it contains less than 2g/L of residual sugar. Coke, for example, contains 106 g/L and many sweet dessert-style wines contain over 150 g/L.

In our research, we’ve seen all sorts of broad statements like “Sparkling Wines are good for those on a keto diet” or “Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet Sauvignon is keto-friendly” or “Red wine is better than white wine”, but to be honest it’s just not that simple as there is incredible variation from wine to wine, even within the same variety or style. The only real way to say a wine is low sugar and keto-friendly is to know the exact Residual Sugar number, as supplied by the winery.
