The 2023 Mitchell Watervale Riesling is the next to add to the lineup of top wines (and top value!) of the year.
2023 was a cooler vintage in the Clare Valley, with a long, slow ripening period. It lead to Rieslings with opulent aromatics and an abundance of fruit-forward characters, still with exceptional fine acidity. This Watervale Riesling is bright and clear with pale straw hues. Aromas of stone fruit and white flowers.
A classic Watervale palate of lemon and lime with crunchy acid throughout and bath salts on the finish. The flavours refresh and linger on the palate with perfect fruit and acid balance.

Maybe not your average Clare Valley Riesling here, maybe a little more Germanic, if you don't mind me. Here we have apple, lime and lemongrass, with a jasmine flower thing. It's juicy, all ginger, lime and lemongrass, quite spicy, fleshy too with rich mint and apple flavour in the mix. Texture is gently chalky and something of a highlight, cashew, aniseed and exotic spice. Finish is excellent, maybe a little sweetness too by way of lime cordial. Zesty. Lovely wine.

Producers notes
Jane and Andrew Mitchell established the winery in 1975 on the Mitchell family property in the western hills of the Clare Valley in South Australia. An old sandstone apple store was converted to serve as a rustic cellar door sales area. Continued growth has resulted in further development of the winery buildings and winemaking plant.
Currently some 500-700 tonnes of premium fruit is crushed and processed in a well equipped modern winery. The imposing two-storey century-old family home sits amid the vineyards, overlooking the winery.
