The Yarra Valley range is made from handpicked fruit from all of our estate vineyards. The wines are produced using indigenous yeasts, gravity-flow winemaking, and minimal fining and filtration. This approach produces highly expressive wines, true to the regional characteristics of the Yarra Valley.

100% hand-picked, all fruit is chilled overnight to 12 deg C. Whole bunch pressed, fermentation on full juice solids, wild yeast. Fermented entirely in 500L French puncheons – 10% new, 90% older. No lees stirring. No malolactic fermentation. Matured in French oak – 10% new, 90% older – for only 8 months. Blended and chilled in tank prior to bottling in late Spring.

2019 was a rollercoaster... with fluctuating temperatures and rain events through Spring driving a very successful flowering in the Gruyere and Tarrawarra sub regions, but a much lower crop set in the Upper Yarra. We then had beautiful, moderate weather in early summer which gave us rich dark green canopies, so that despite a few heat spikes in January, we had access to plenty of pristine bunches at harvest. Acidities were surprisingly fresh, perhaps driven by cool nights and the Chardonnay parcels have a depth and intensity we haven’t seen since 2015.

Our notes

Quite stunning pure fruited contemporary Chardonnay with racy tense fresh acids and light biscuity oak (10% new). No malo. No lees stirring. Quite Chabliesque. Upright, unadorned, mouthwatering and pure. May not be for the buttery camp, but wow this is good winemaking and a beautiful modern Chardonnay. Well done to the Giant Steps team!

A blend of the individual vineyard releases – Sexton, Tarraford, Applejack, Primavera and Wombat Creek – with a little more input besides. It gets “the Rolls Royce treatment” and then it’s blended to become this.

Grilled almonds and peaches with wet stones and runs of citrus. Beautiful (creamy) texture, flavour and composure. The elegance of this, the exotic wet stone notes, the smoky push on the finish. It’s all pretty much into wow territory. This is a gorgeous release, essence of chardonnay, scores schmores, buy and drink.

An even split of upper and lower Yarra fruit. Whole-bunched pressed and wild fermented in 15% new French puncheons. Around 5% mlf. A light, bright green gold. Pure fruited with an attractive nose of just ripened orchard and stone fruits, pink grapefruit and orange blossom. A hint of matchstick and just-baked ginger snaps. Concentrated and lithe at the same time, Giant Step's calling card is just as good, if not better than the super 2021 release.

Producers notes

Giant Steps focuses exclusively on the distinctive expression of single vineyard sites in the Yarra Valley. Grapes are drawn from estate and leased vineyards as well as grapes from long-term contracted growers, supported by strong relationships and meticulous supervision throughout the year. Giant Steps wines are produced fastidiously in the vineyard and vinified with minimal intervention so that each wine is a faithful expression of site, vintage and culture.
