Two things attracted us to Terrason; firstly the incredibly fair pricing given the quality of the wines and small production, and the impeccable craftsmanship we found when tasting them. We describe them as unhurried authentic natural feeling wines that ooze character and point towards some serious ability in the winemaking and palate of the maker, Marc Lunt.
Marc’s list of credentials is seriously impressive including stints working in France for what is probably the most esteemed Burgundian 'holier than thou' producers such as Domaine de la Romanee Conti [or DRC] and Domaine Armand Rousseau, amongst others.
Obviously with such training, the pinot noir from the ultra-cool Upper Yarra subregion of Gembrook is just beautiful, pretty, understated and pure expressing all the magic one looks for in a delicate gently expressive pinot noir. Marc also makes a lovely Cabernet Franc, a Loire Valley French variety which seems to have grown wings in the Yarra recently. There’s also a complex savoury 'sans soufre’ or sulphur-free Gamay from the King Valley that is just delicious. And lastly a rare Australian Aligote, the poor white wine cousin to Chardonnay in Burgundy, which Mark has sculpted into an interesting textural flavoursome dry white.
