Canberra District Biodynamic pioneers
The Lark Hill vineyard was established in 1978 by Sue and Dave Carpenter. From day one, it has been run according to organic principles. In 2003 the Carpenter’s went a step further and converted to biodynamic farming eventually receiving NASAA certification in 2006.
The wines are made without any inputs whatsoever, no manipulation and zero chemical adjustments. As well as very low sulphur additions of only 20ppm at bottling. A requirement for certification as a biodynamic producer.
All of this is to allow in the wines the true realisation of ’terroir’. That mysterious French expression which basically translates to 'a sense of place’ or ’somewhereness’. In 2011, Lark Hill also acquired a second vineyard in Murrumbateman.
This vineyard is lower than the cooler Bungendore Vineyard, located high on the Lake George Escarpment and more suited to later ripening varieties like Shiraz and Sangiovese. It was also certified biodynamic in 2013.
These are refined cool climate wines with the impressive and highly acclaimed lark Hill Gruner Veltliner and Lark Hill Riesling leading the charge.
