Like all great winemakers, Adam Wadewitz is pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable, making wines that reflect his incredible palate and that further his greater goal of elevating the prestige and quality of Australian wine. We tasted his 2020 Nebbiolo and Gamay over the Christmas break and were blown away by the purity and sheet beauty of these two wines. We see Wadewitz as one of the most important contemporary winemakers in Australia, an opinion consolidated by his recent "Winemaker of the Year” 2022 accolade with The Wine Magazine.
Adam excelled working for the iconic winery Best’s in Great Western Victoria, where he made stylish cool climate shiraz, picking up the Jimmy Watson Trophy for his 2011 Best’s Bin No. 1 Shiraz along the journey. He was eveuntually head hunted by the Shaw and Smith team, who are also responsible for the highly regarded Tolpuddle Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which Adam has quietly elevated to one of the finest and most sought after brands in Tasmania. In May last year, Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay 2020 won Best Australian White wine at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) and the 2021 vintage scored a perfect 100 points with Nick Stock in The Wine Magazine.
But the accolades for Adam and his wines don’t stop there. He has gained valuable experience working alongside other great winemakers such as as P J Charteris at Brokenwood, and has also spent stints at Petaluma, Seppelts Great Western, as well as wineries in France, Chile, and the USA. He was also awarded joint Dux of the 2009 Len Evans Tutorial, which is undoubtedly the hardest and most notorious wine tasting examination in the country - not an easy feat!
