It is without a doubt that Domenic Torzi makes some of the best and best value wines getting around at the moment, certainly from the Barossa. Dom as a person and as a winemaker is a down to earth bloke which we really like and find refreshing. Likewise his wines are very high quality as reviewer Andrew Graham notes yet his fair pricing strategy keeps his wines within the reach of all wine lovers. This GSM is a beauty and quite absurd value coming from old vine plantings. The balance is the key to a Torzi Mathews wine.

There's the warmth and rich flavour of sun drenched Barossa fruit in the wine but with absolutely no hint of alcohol heat or jamminess. There’s a smidge of oak and mouth puckering tannin that adds some structure with an unexpected freshness on the finish which keep all that dark brooding fruit on its tip toes. Bargain!

Raspberry jubes, cocoa and aniseed, fair perfume of dried herbs and flowers. Medium-bodied, choc-liquorice, juicy red berries, hazelnut, something a little more steely, saline, and ferrous, though that’s as yet more latent as the vibrant fruit is currently front and centre. A light graininess to tannin, freshness too, with a juicy finish of excellent length. It’s fun and bouncy now, though I reckon it will be better again in a few years when it settles down a bit.

Producers notes

Domenic Torzi and Tracy Matthews, former Adelaide Plains residents, searched for a number of years before finding a block at Mt McKenzie in the Eden Valley. The block they chose is in a hollow; the soil is meagre, but they were in no way deterred by the knowledge that it would be frost-prone. The result is predictably low yields, concentrated further by drying the grapes on rack, thus reducing the weight by around 30% (the Appassimento method is used in Italy to produce Amarone-style wines). Newer plantings of sangiovese and negro amaro, and an extension of the original plantings of shiraz and riesling, have seen the wine range increase.
