A fine boned Chardonnay that reflects the conditions of the vintage and the character of this unique vineyard site.

There was record rainfall throughout the growing season but importantly it reduced to average in November during flowering and was dry during March, the later part of ripening. Record low temperatures were also recorded resulting in a late, very cool vintage. Flavours are intense and the natural acidity is striking.

Our notes

From Lenswood at 500 meters elevation from vines planted in 2001, loam over clay and shale, east-facing from Bernard 76 & 95 clones planted at 4760 vines per hectare. Beautiful focused aromas of white peach, tangy nectarine, grapefruit and subtle nutty high quality French oak nuances ushers in a tight minerally palate that echo’s the nose with similar flavours. Bristling with energy, this lovely Chardonnay delivers flavour as well as plenty of impressive class and structure. CR

Oh, my how these chardonnays from Shaw and Smith have evolved. This is an outstanding wine from this cool subregion within the Adelaide Hills that has proved ideal for chardonnay. This has been created as a more generous style while retaining the essential and defining cool climate edge to focus and align through to the extended finish. Layer upon layer of complex flavours is the hallmark of this cracking Adelaide Hills chardonnay with notes of crème brulee, nougat, lemon curd and light char revealing themselves. There’s an oatmeal citrus tang with dry savoury overtones. This is compelling and remarkable. Brilliant wine. 98 Points.

This single-vineyard bottling, from a super cool site, has a very tight-wound feel. The nose is really wound into reductive territory with flinty grapefruit and nectarine aromas, layered with almonds and oak spice. The palate has a very sleek, elegant feel and runs so, so long with such fresh white peaches and pithy lemons. Spiced-almond finish. Superb chardonnay here. 97 Points

From a propitiously situated vineyard 500m, this plays a ‘cool handed Luke’ of reductive gun flint tension, a faint whiff of apricot and nectarine, alongside a rivet of creamed cashew and nougat. Tight and febrile of energy, yet far from severe. This a streamlined Chardonnay of the finest pedigree. 96 Points, Gold.

Plenty of dazzle dazzle to this. Nectarine, nougat, crushed apple and cream notes pour confidently through the palate and then on to a beautifully sustained finish. Cashew-cream texture, pure elegant fruit, and excellent length. The word sizzle crossed my mind, it just has that energy. 95 Points.
