A fine boned Chardonnay that reflects the conditions of the vintage and the character of this unique vineyard site.
From blocks three and four in our Lenswood Vineyard. First planted in 1999, it has east and west facing aspects and reaches 500 meters above sea level. The soil is brown loam over clay with some broken shale and stone on the ridges. Whole bunches were chilled overnight, then pressed, before fermentation in new and used 500 litre French oak puncheons. The wine spent a further 10 months in barrel with gentle stirring.
Story
Since purchasing the vineyard in 2012, significant investments have been made to further enhance the site. It had always shown potential for a single site wine and in 2014 a small amount was selected for our first 'Lenswood Vineyard' Chardonnay.

Pale colour. Intense white peach, white apricot marzipan tonic water aromas
with honey vanilla notes. Beautifully balanced wine with fresh stonefruit, lemon
curd flavours, fine lacy textures, superb creamy complexity and underlying
marzipan vanillin notes. Finishes long and minerally. A top-notch Adelaide Hills
Chardonnay with amazing flow, clarity and persistency. Drinking beautifully now.

Fermented wild in new and used 500L puncheons; maturated for 10 months with
occasional stir. Among the country’s varietal exemplars. Transparent and tensile
with an additional nuance of flavour, vibrato and mineral cohesion etched into the
firmament of complexity each year. White peach, toasted hazelnut, jasmine and
nougatine teem long. The oak, nestled beautifully, serves as a framing backdrop
rather the centrepiece. A wine of precision, intense flavours and immense class.

Shaw + Smith is an alliance between cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith. Their aim is to make contemporary, high quality wines that are outstanding examples of their type made from grapes grown in the Adelaide Hills.
Shaw + Smith specialise in grape varieties suited to the cooler climate of the Adelaide Hills, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay & Shiraz.
The vineyard is located on a 28 ha property planted at Woodside Vineyard with new plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir at Balhannah.
