A year like 2023 with an abundance of natural acidity in the grapes, makes it a perfect vintage for exquisitely balanced Off Dry Rieslings. The bouquet is richly imbued with intense tropical fruit aromas of passionfruit, pineapple and papaya, with floral top-notes of orange blossom and honeysuckle. These sweetly succulent aromas transition seamlessly onto lusciously flavoured palate, where the sweet tropical flavours are balanced by a delightful zing of sherbet-like acidity. The natural sweetness of the style adds an unctuous richness to the mid-palate, while the driving natural acidity imparts linearity and length with a crisp, clean finish.

Our notes

Incredibly delicious! Balance of sweetness and acid here is bang on, and the riper fruit flavours are so inviting. Don't be scared as this coming across as a sweet wine though, the finish is clean and fresh and the acidity so mouth watering. We dare you to stop at  one glass - impossible!

"This medium-dry Clare Valley Riesling is fresh and tightly wound, offering up a well weighted core of sherbet, passionfruit and pear aromas with a gentle lining of spice. A beautiful line of flavour follows, reserved sweetness kept in check by laser like acidity driving through to a long, stony and drying finish. Immaculate balance will see this age very well. 2026-2035"

"Beautiful floral, honeysuckle, lime, talc scented, highly aromatic bouquet: there's the sense that the residual sugar is lifting the fruit, which is often the way in off-dry and semi-sweet style rieslings. Exquisite aromas, a note of stone-fruits, the taste off-dry but you would never describe it as sweet. It dries off towards the back-palate with a lot of acidity. Beautifully balanced, a magical wine. The most gorgeous wine on the day. (From the Hughes family's White Hutt vineyard. 13 grams/litre of sweetness. On the riesling scale: half-way through the medium-dry section)"

Producers notes

Rieslingfreak is the inspiration of John Hughes, a man who is very passionate about his rieslings. The first vintage of the brand was in 2009, with a single vineyard Clare Valley Riesling. Since then, the label has expanded to include Eden Valley and Polish Hill River regions.

The brand philosophy is to represent the hallmarks of a single region with their iconic winemaking style. Each Rieslingfreak wine is allocated an individual number. This number represents not only the region in which the fruit was grown, but also the style and technical specifications with which the wine is made.

Rieslingfreak is about providing consumers with a range of specially crafted rieslings embracing both different regions and styles. It is only released from vintages considered worthy.
