Smoked meat, dried cherry, cracked pepper, and cassis on the deeply scented nose.
Medium to full-bodied with berry cobbler flavours showing a liqueur-like intensity with an anise note coming up with air. The smoke and cassis notes carry through on the finish, which features dusty tannins. A wine of real intensity and concentration given the price point.

Usually Zinfandel is a blockbuster style, yet this example from Salento in Puglia in the South of Italy introduces some restraint, tangy bright acidity, savouriness and freshness which is very welcome. Make no mistake though there is still plenty of oomph and power for people that like ‘presence’ in their wines!
Made by guru winemaker Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie in Montalcino, for the price this Italian Primitivo is simply unreal full-bodied drinking with lashings of intense sweet dark berry fruit, savoury earth, old leather, smokiness, and spicy black peppery notes. Poggio Anima is a joint venture between Montalcino superstar Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie. The idea is pretty simple: to source the best vineyards from existing relationships and produce a real wine that conveys a place and a grape. These wines are not bulk wines, nor leftover juice from a winery, but long term contracts that we have signed with reputable growers.
Poggio Anima translates to ‘Hill of Soul.’ Going back to the concept of Poggio Anima we wanted to capture the ‘soul’ of each vineyard and grape. No manipulation, no water, sugar, etc. Just the pure expression of the fruit and site. I would argue that many wines have a ‘soul,’ but very few weeknight wines share this. Poggio Anima has come along to change this.
