Located in the beautiful hill-top village of Montefalco in Umbria the 15-hectare Paolo Bea Winery is one of the finest in Italy. Although the Bea family have been in the region since the 15 th century, the winery was only founded in 1980 and Paulo remains committed to retaining old fashioned techniques and making wines that are a true reflection of the surrounding terroir. Staunchly artisanal, with much of the work done by hand without the aid of modern technology, the wines are raised without pesticides or herbicides and are robust and complex. Made from the estate's youngest Sagrantino vines, Rosso de Veo comes from the Cerrete vineyard, the highest point of Bea's estate at about 1500 feet above sea level. It is vinified in much the same way as the Montefalco Sagrantino which includes a 40-50 day cuvaison, a year of aging in stainless steel, two years in oak barrels, and another year in bottle before release.

Over the past 35 years, Giampiero Bea—both through his own deeply personal wines and his far-reaching influence—has become a cornerstone of our family of growers. Building on the work of his father, a through-and-through farmer whose Umbrian dialect is so thick as to be nearly incomprehensible to outsiders, Giampiero realized what made Paolo’s wines so special and built a working philosophy around it. In a series of decades that saw Italian winegrowers embracing modern technology whole-hog, Giampiero—as co-founder of the ViniVeri (“Real Wine”) group—advocated for respectful vineyard work, biodiversity, a de-emphasis on technology in the cellar, non-engagement with professional critics, and an overall trust in old tried-and-true agrarian wisdom.
