The Sheoak vineyard makes expressive, medium-bodied silky structured wines. Dark fruit flavours and high notes of cassis and warm spice frame this slightly more brooding release of the Nocturne SV. While it’s amazingly accessible on release, this wine would love 3 to 6 years further maturation, which will really make this amazing wine shine. – Julian Langworthy

Halliday Wine Companion
Cabernet off the Sheaok Vineyard, and it’s a beauty (although it comes in a way-too-heavy bottle about 1.5kg when full). No complaints about the flavour profile of blackberry essence and cassis, cedary oak spices and toasted nori, black olive tapenade and menthol. It’s fuller bodied with a ping of lively acidity, and the tannins are lovely – ripe yet with a cocoa-powder texture. Understandably there’ll be a desire to open this now, but it will garner more complexity with age.

Julian Langworthy is an iconic figure in the Margaret River landscape and it should be said he is highly regarded beyond those borders too, having been awarded the 2016 Jimmy Watson Trophy for his Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet and becoming James Halliday’s 2019 Winemaker of the Year. Demand for his wines have since been electric, particularly the Single Vineyard Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon under his own personal label, Nocturne.
In 2019 Julian and his wife Alana addressed this demand from wine lovers for their SV range with the introduction of their sub-regional (SR) range – a trio that drew fruit from the same original site as the SV wines, supplemented with grapes from another vineyard in the same pocket of Margaret River. The move to releasing these more ‘accessible’ SR wines invited more people to dive into the Nocturne story.
