The palate mirrors the style of fresh and vibrant aromas, whilst showing softness with juicy strawberry fruits and supportive sappy fine tannins from careful stalk management.  The fruit was handpicked and de-stemmed, allowing for the retention of whole berries, open-fermented in small one-ton vats.

Varying levels of whole bunches were included in the ferments ranging from 25% - 100%, this aided structure and spice to the wine. Minimal maceration during fermentation was adopted to produce an elegant wine style. Matured in French barriques with 15% new oak to achieve complexity and length to the wine.

Our notes

This is an awesome Pinot Noir which stands testimony to the quality of fruit and Michael Downer’s astute clever winemaking. Just beautiful to drink… CR

The Wine Front
Tasted blind in a line-up of twenty Pinot Noir, and liked it immediately. But my oh my. What to do when it’s not CM or MB reviewing these wines! Characterful wine dancing to its own tune. Sweet cherry, liquorice pastille, mint and amaro herbs, slight cedar wood in support. It’s medium-bodied, succulent and laced with cool herb perfume, fresh and fine and dusty in tannin. Strange to say, it has a kinship with many an Alto Piedmont wine, which gets me in the zone straight away. And the finish is long with the zest of orange, cherries and pine perfume. Very different from most Australian Pinot Noir, but in a very good way.

Plenty of wine with strong varietal personality. At this price, that is what one seeks. Moreover, a skerrick of whole-bunch for grip and a pulpy, herbal complexity; ambient small batch ferments contributing to the makeup and quality oak, too, for good measure. Think a whiff of sandalwood, fecund strawberry scents and dank forest floor. Delicious in a primal, elemental, uncluttered way.

Producers notes

The Artisan Series by Murdoch Hill is an exclusive range of handmade wines. These wines are made in small batches from a diverse range of vineyard sites throughout the Adelaide Hills.

Michael crafts the wines from vineyard to bottle using a minimalistic approach, utilising indigenous yeast, whole bunch fermentation and extended skin contact to best express the fruit and unique characters of each distinguished vineyard.

Our family has been farming the fertile soils of the Onkaparinga Valley since 1939 and in this time there have been many cattle grazing, hens laying, potatoes grown, flowers picked and since 1998 we have been passionately caring for our vines, and making great wines.

Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)

In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").

Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.

For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.

Our intention is to offer free shipping to as many wine lovers as possible, however, given the geographically vast size of Australia, it is not possible for us to offer free shipping to 100% of postcodes.
