Ministry of Clouds Tempranillo Grenache - McLaren Vale
Closure: Screw cap
Bottle size: 750 ml
Creation Three vineyards of Tempranillo, all from cool sites in Blewitt Springs, the McLaren Flat Foothills, and the Adelaide Hills proper. We kept 18% whole-bunch, including a portion which we carbonic macerated, and then de-stemmed the balance to retain whole berries for traditional open ferment. With a desire to preserve freshness and vibrancy and to build a wider aromatic profile on the Tempranillo, it was left to the Grenache component to provide mid palate intensity. Old vine Grenache from three blocks ranging up to a 100 years of age were destemmed and fermented in large open vats, with daily pump overs.
After basket pressing the wine was matured in a mixture of stainless steel, old French oak puncheons, and a large 5000l old oak foudre for 11 months maturation before bottling…
This wine combines bright notes of pomegranate, sarsaparilla, violets and nutmeg typical of dry grown Tempranillo, with the perfume and succulence of old vine Grenache. This medium bodied wine is pretty and deliberately moreish. A lithe and juicy wine, it errs on the blood orange, cherry, red berry spectrum on the palate supported by savoury tannins built around a fine boned structure. Consumption Ideal serving temperature is 16 °C…
Enjoy over a shared grazing meal, this food friendly versatile wine works a treat with a good selection of flavours from a platter of cured meats to, chorizo prawns to pizzas, pastas, quail and duck dishes. Cool cellaring between 5 years to 8 years will be rewarded.
Ministry of Clouds is a toast to the pursuit of a life well-lived, and those who savour the freedom it affords. Our business was born of this desire – to carve out our own path by relinquishing the security of the past and embracing the unpredictability of life.
The partnership of two corporate refugees, our wines speak of the land and distill the essence of the season, embodying a spirit of independence and adventure, each one true to their style and place.
McLaren Vale is our heartland, where our reds are made with grapes from our own 11ha plot and other carefully selected, often ancient vines. We favour a modern take on classic styles and meticulous attention to detail. Through our wines, we celebrate those growers who persisted while others begged them to turn their land to other pursuits.
Our reds revel in Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro and Tempranillo – restrained and poised, of modest build and delicate balance, while our whites – a crystalline, dry Clare Valley Riesling and Tasmanian Chardonnay – hail from these distant but proven regions.
The culmination of a dream without borders, this is a tale of discovery, of finding our voice, and embracing the uncontrollable. Our hands get dirty, our backs sore and our hearts full.
The result is wines that beg to be shared at the convivial table, alongside friends and flavours from far-flung corners of the globe. Pull up a seat and drink deeply.
