#7 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2023

Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 2020 is an intense ruby red colour. Expressive on the nose with fresh notes of red fruit that lead over to floral hints of mallow and lavender. The rich bouquet is accented by sweet notes of white chocolate that give rise to piquant spicy aromas. Entry on the palate is smooth and mouth filling, followed by elegant flavours with vibrant tannins that express the typical energy of the vineyards of origin. The finish is long, flavourful, and persistent echoing notes of white pepper, cocoa powder, and flowers.

Our notes

Antinori has been making wine in Tuscany since 1385, putting the word 'experienced' into another dimension. Sangiovese for this wine is grown in the heart of the Chianti Classico region and delivers a wine packed full of red cherry fruit and layers of secondary cinnamon oak spice, tobacco, leather and earth typical of the best wines in the region.

A tight, fruity red with black-cherry and blueberry aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with chewy yet fine-grained tannins. Love the polish and focus. Driven and linear. Drink after 2021.

A sleek, elegant red, with fine purity to the aromas of cherry, black currant, iron, olive and tobacco. Shows new oak on the palate, lending both spiciness and structure offset by ample fruit and texture. Ends with a balanced, complex finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2047.—Bruce Sanderson

Producers notes

26 Generations: The Antinori family has been making wine for over six hundred years, since Giovanni di Piero Antinori became part of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri in 1385. Throughout its long history, spanning 26 generations, the family has always personally managed the business making innovative, sometimes courageous choices, always with unwavering respect for tradition and the land. Today Marchese Piero Antinori is director of the company, assisted by his three daughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, who are personally involved in the business. The qualities of tradition, passion and instinct have made Antinori one of the leading Italian producers of fine quality wines. Every vintage, every terroir, every idea is a new beginning, a new quest to raise our quality margins.
