Named after the town of ‘Avignon’ in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region in France, which is famous for making a wine blended from Grenache / Shiraz / Mourvèdre, or GSM as we know it. At Kaesler each version of the ‘Avignon’ is slightly different depending on vintage conditions and composition of the varieties. However, every year the grapes are sourced from our famous 90 year old Barossa vines. Bright garnet to ruby red. Bursting with red berry fruit. An ensemble of red and black berries on the front to middle palate, hints of savoury spice on the back.

Producers notes

The first members of the Kaesler family settled in the Barossa Valley in 1845. The vineyards date back to 93, but the Kaesler family ownership ended in 1968. After several changes, the present (much-expanded) Kaesler Wines was acquired by a small group of investment bankers headed by Swiss-born, Singapore-resident, quietly spoken Ed Peter (who has since acquired Yarra Yering), in conjunction with former Flying Winemaker Reid Bosward and wife Bindy. Reids experience shows through in the wines, which now come from estate vineyards, 40ha adjacent to the winery, and 10ha in the Marananga area. The latter includes shiraz planted in 1899, with both blocks seeing plantings in the 1930s, 60s, then each decade through to the present.
