Katharina Prüm explains the Goldkapsel wines in this way: “Think of them as limited edition, small production lots of the best Auslese of a vintage. They are made from stronger, selected grapes containing higher concentrated juice, usually affected by a certain amount of botrytis, capable of aging even remarkably longer than ‘basic’ Auslesen, lasting for many decades. Over time, they lose some of their sweetness, gain more and more elegance and harmony, and the complex profile and depth come to the forefront.”

Library Release 2022. They released some bottles early but kept some back. Though Katharina Prüm still thinks this is a little too young to drink. Intoxicating and promising kerosene-like notes but just as prominent is the intense grapefruit aroma. Mouth-filling richness, the sweetness perfectly balanced by the acidity so that it flows cooly across the palate. Peach and apricot sorbet on the finish. Pure pleasure, and not as sweet-tasting as you might expect. 18/20 points, Julia Harding MW, Jancis Robinson.com

Producers notes

The Prüm family history in the Mosel dates back to 1150, but it was Johan Josef Prüm who established the estate in 1911, and Johan’s son Sebastian who carved out the distinctive style of the Prüm wines in the 1930’s. In the late 1960’s the great Dr. Manfred Prüm took the reins and raised the estate to benchmark status as the finest of the Mosel, where it has remained ever since. Today, the winery is managed by fourth generation Katharina Prüm, who continues her family’s stellar legacy.

The estate has 33.5 acres of vineyards planted with Riesling on steeply-sloping, Devon schist soils. The vast majority of the holdings are in the top middle-Mösel sites: Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler Bratenhöfchen. Yields are severely restricted and harvesting is late and often continues through to late November. The winemaking is meticulous and the wines are characterised by their purity of fruit as well as by their distinctive mineral/slate character.
