Hickinbotham The Nest Cabernet Franc 2019 - McLaren Vale
Bottle size: 750ml
96 Points - Erin Larkin - 95 Points - Gary Walsh
A pure Cabernet Franc, it expresses true varietal characteristics of red currant, red berry and leafy, bracken notes. The palate has a compact style with finely compressed tannins that create a smooth, almost polished texture. The enduring freshness, intensity and elegance of this wine are the defining characters.
This is not like most Australian Cabernet Francs that are often light weight and smashable. It’s got more layers, depth and power, more structure and weight, and reminds me a bit of the serious Reserve Cabernet Francs from the iconic Blue Poles winery in Margaret River. It’s wonderfully fragrant on the nose with rich dark cherry/plum fruit hemmed in by fine dusty tannins and attractive oak spice nuances. It’s a large frame Cabernet Franc but also refined and beautifully crafted. Very impressive… CR
Hand picked 22nd March. Destemmed and whole-berry sorted, gentle crush. Cold soak and wild ferment. Pumped over daily, 15 days on skins. Basket pressed with light pressings included with free-run juice. Racked and returned twice during 15 months’ maturation in fine-grained French oak (50% new). The quality of fruit, tannic precision and apposite application of oak under this banner are unequalled in Australia. Nobody else gets it quite as right. The budget and gear help, yet it is the viticulture and sites that are the foundation for everything else. Franc from a warm place, salvaging its sappy cavalcade of tannin, crunch and floral lift. Redcurrant, spearmint and chilli powder lace a finely tuned finish marked by a flourish of garden herb. Kerpow! Erin Larkin
Gary Walsh on the Cabernet Franc, 95 Points
"This is a better wine than The Peake for me. More specific, more individual, better tannin profile. Bold almost Napa style, lavish, ironstone feel, distinct ‘mineral’ profile to it, succulence, baked raspberry and rosehip perfume. Plenty of oak, but it soaks it up. Powers through the finish. I’d take this to the pool room, The Peake can best be enjoyed by the seaside, for its briny charms… Ozone, charisma, chew of tannin. This is outstanding. And it tastes way less oaky than The Peake.”
