Domaine Marquis d'Angerville has 3.98 hectares in the Champans appellation, located just north of the Caillerets appellation. Two parallel plots constitute our part of the appellation (11 hectares in total). They extend from top to bottom of the Champans and hillside climate, thus taking advantage of all the characteristics of this remarkable south-east facing terroir, located in the center of the Volnay Premiers Crus. The soil is poorer and sits on a rocky limestone bench at the top of the hill as the slope tapers down and it becomes more clayey, stony and deeper.

Historically classified as Têtes de Cuvée de Volnay, Champans is the archetype of the great Volnay 1er cru: finesse, fullness and length in the mouth with an additional generosity and power all its own. Depending on the vintage, it deserves 5 to 10 years of aging to fully reveal itself, but it is generally more easily approached young than Taillepieds or Clos des Ducs.

Our notes

The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has an outgoing bouquet similar to the Taillepieds, albeit one with more intellectual weight and gravitas behind it. Black cherries, blueberry and light cassis aromas reveal crushed stone and undergrowth notes, all delivered with intensity and superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly firmer, stockier tannins than the Taillepieds, darker fruit and grainier texture toward the persistent finish. I see this has having real long-term potential. Excellent.

93-95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

Like the Taillpieds, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Champans is another of the more muscular, introverted wines in the cellar, exhibiting aromas of raspberries, rose petals, orange rind and dark chocolate, followed by a medium to full-bodied, concentrated and youthfully chewy palate that's amply endowed with ripe tannin and juicy acids. This is a fine Champans in the making, but as is almost invariably the case, it will demand some patience.

92-94 points, William Kelley, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Producers notes

Today, the Domaine Marquis d'Angerville brings together around 16.5 hectares, concentrated in the commune of Volnay, including 11.5 hectares in Volnay Premier Cru. All these plots are based on marl-limestone scree ideally exposed to the south-east. The often accentuated drop facilitates drainage and prevents excess humidity. The shallow depth of the soil and the work of the vine force it to plunge its roots deeply into the subsoil. These particularly stony grounds retain the solar heat to better restore it on the bunches and to promote their maturation.
