After a several-year hiatus while we waited for our new pinot noir vines to grow, the Stoney Vineyard Pinot Noir returns—juicy, fresh and floral. Drawn from a new block at the bottom of the vineyard, the fruit character is bright and light, with fresh raspberries and wafts of baked cherry pie overlaid by floral, almost peachy spice notes. Palate is light but well structured, with skinsy tannins and good supporting acid. A vibrant expression of a promising new block.

Domaine A is of course now under the custodianship of Moorilla Estate. In the past, Domaine A’s Stoney pinot noir was made from bought-in fruit, but under Moorilla it’s now home grown. That is, in 2019 they extended the Stoney Vineyard by planting a further 2.5Ha of pinot noir using the Dijon clones 114 and 115.
This first release is a very good start, too. It has structure, it has good varietal definition, and it has character. In fact the more I tasted it the more I liked it. It’s strewn with herbs and undergrowth, it’s dark (berried) and meaty in its flavour profile, it’s stringy with tannin and it’s been hit with the most complementary degree of quality cedarwood oak. The vines may well be very young but the wine is very good.
