Aphelion Trenerry Grenache 2021 - McLaren Vale
Bottle size: 750ml
95 Points - Gary Walsh - The Wine Front
Herbal characters abound the palate, with rosehip, just-ripe strawberry, and blood orange flavours. A rasp of light tannin provides good length and a savoury finish. The Trenerry Grenache has a great energy and vitality in a light to medium bodied frame.
The fruit was hand-picked on the 9th March and processed as a 100% whole bunch ferment. After a slow and cool ferment the fruit was pressed to large format neutral French oak where it remained on full lees until racking for bottling in January 2022.
Only a single demi-muid barrel (600L) of this wine was produced. Part of the premium SV Grenache range, the fruit used to make this wine is sourced from a single vineyard in the Onkaparinga Hills area of McLaren Vale owned by the Trenerry family. The lightest and most aromatic wine in the range, red fruits mingle with herbal briar characters to create a wine of freshness and depth.

Reviews
The lightest and most ethereal of the single-vineyard explorations. Onkaparinga Hills. Fermented wild as 100% whole bunches before pressing to large-format French oak, as is the wont here. Orange macerated with cinnamon. Pink grapefruit. Clove. Dill pickle. Orangina. Cranberry. The tannins, diaphanous and frisky, etching the gums while eking out the long finish. This is more nebbiolo of feel than pinot, grenache's stylistic brethren. I would argue that while fascinating, it could use some mid-palate stuffing and a smidge more physiological ripeness in its strive toward completion. Delicious all the same.

Onkaparinga. A wonderful word.
Plum and cherry, ripe and spicy, an earthy coal-like character. It’s firm and almost liqueur-like in intensity, with firm dusty tannin, and a dry plum and dried flower finish. Very good, but not quite as good as the other two single vineyard wines. Kind of sticky in its firmness.
