This is Katharina Prüm’s desert island category. Light in body but intense in flavour, the wines deliver a mesmerising balance between elegance, freshness, racy fruit and slate-like minerality, unique to the Mosel. As always, there is considerably more depth of fruit here than in the Kabinett-level wines, although not necessarily more overt sweetness. Instead, it is a question of more flesh, more power and, therefore, wines that can stand up to richer food. Prüm believes this category is the most versatile at the table—and she should know!

Smoke, lime zest, the ripest Mirabelle, and a highlight of chervil play on the nose of the 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese. More air brings wonderfully ripe notions of lemon zest, not quite candied but delightfully ripe. The palate is rounded, concentrated, profound and full of golden yet citrus-edged fruit. Slightly richer than the other Spätlesen but beautifully long with alluring ripe lemon and lime freshness. Weightless substance. Wonderful.

Producers notes

The Prüm family history in the Mosel dates back to 1150, but it was Johan Josef Prüm who established the estate in 1911, and Johan’s son Sebastian who carved out the distinctive style of the Prüm wines in the 1930’s. In the late 1960’s the great Dr. Manfred Prüm took the reins and raised the estate to benchmark status as the finest of the Mosel, where it has remained ever since. Today, the winery is managed by fourth generation Katharina Prüm, who continues her family’s stellar legacy.

The estate has 33.5 acres of vineyards planted with Riesling on steeply-sloping, Devon schist soils. The vast majority of the holdings are in the top middle-Mösel sites: Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler Bratenhöfchen. Yields are severely restricted and harvesting is late and often continues through to late November. The winemaking is meticulous and the wines are characterised by their purity of fruit as well as by their distinctive mineral/slate character.
