Pyramid Valley - New Zealand

Pyramid Valley - New Zealand

We had the absolute pleasure of hosting Pyramid Valley Winemaker Huw Kinch on Wednesday evening for an exclusive tasting of his latest releases, and what a stand out lineup it was. The Chardonnay and Orange were my two personal highlights, but every wine on show was genuinely a delight to taste through.

The Pyramid Valley site in Waikari was originally purchased in 2000 by Mike and Claudia Weersing, a formidable duo with a dedication to biodynamics and significant experience across Burgundy and Europe. The Weersings spent close to the next two decades bringing their vineyard to life and building a stellar reputation for their very small production wines. In 2017 they made the difficult decision to sell, and the next chapter was begun by new owners Brian Seth and Steve Smith MW (previously of Craggy Range). In 2018 they brought in Huw Kinch (previously of Escarpment) as Estate Manager and Winemaker. Huw has worked tirelessly to refine the wines and maintain the integrity and authenticity of the vineyards.

It is no secret that the new team behind Pyramid Valley Wines carry on the ambition to produce some of the best cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the world. For many in the industry, they are already there: "Benchmark New Zealand vineyard and wines. If not a yardstick for chardonnay and pinot noir globally. No Joke.” Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.

Kinch's dedication to the wines is unmistakable. It is still early days for the new chapter of Pyramid Valley Wines, but the quality and purity of the releases since 2019 has been astonishing to say the least. Kinch is slowly expanding plantings to follow Weersings original plan for the vineyard, and we anticipate a meteoric rise in coming years.

Pyramid Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2021, North Canterbury NZ 13.5% Alc
Lovley dry minerally nose with notes of green herbs, chalk and flinty crushed stone amidst varietal gooseberry Sauvignon Blanc notes. The palate is alive with brisk green fruits infused in tense minerality and driving lemony crisp acidity. Definitely unique with a lick of neutral oak adding to texture.

Pyramid Valley Chardonnay 2020, North Canterbury NZ 14% Alc
Some reduction at first blows off quickly with air opening to notes of ripe stone fruit; white fleshed peach, nectarine married to subtle nutty complexities and a bit of oak spice. Loaded with flavour but not overdone kept in check by bristling lemony acids that keeps everything harmonious. Really good NZ Chardonnay!

Pyramid Valley Rose 2021, North Canterbury NZ 13.5% Alc
Tart strawberry with a little cream which tightens and energizes so typical of these Pyramid Valley wines. Made from 96% Pinot Noir and 4 % Pinot Gris , this is dry, refined, and bristling with flavour and vitality. A superior Rose! CR

Pyramid Valley Orange 2021, North Canterbury NZ 13.5% Alc
Potentially one of the finest Orange Wines we have tried. A blend of 80% Pinot Gris, 11% Sauvignon Blanc, 7 % Riesling, 1 % Muscat, and 1 % Gewurtztraminer. 100% whole bunch fermented, this lovely wine shows delicious notes of orange rind, sweet cherries, and juicy mandarin, held in shape by impressive skinsy tannin, making it feel like a red wine. Excellent Orange wine of pure deliciousness…!

Pyramid Valley Pinot Noir 2020, North Canterbury NZ 13% Alc
25% Whole Bunch, all hand picked, wild yeast fermented, and matured with only 20% new French oak. Quite a ‘polished’ Pinot Noir with a little new oak spice peeking through, otherwise awash with lovely pinosity showing bright cherries and plum against attractive stem and whole bunch nuances. Feels beautiful in the mouth with silken textures, and finishes with upbeat acidity and freshness. Decant.

Pyramid Valley Pinot Noir 2020, Central Otago NZ 14% Alc
25 % Whole Bunch. Hand picked, wild yeast fermented, unfined and unfiltered with 25% new oak. One of the more elegant Otago Pinots I have tried in recent times. Great acid and drive with beautiful textures and delicious powerful Otago Pinot fruit. Stands up to the Pyramid Valley reputation. I’d advise decanting this. Excellent.

Cheers
