Domaine Prieure Roch 2018 Vintage release

Domaine Prieure Roch 2018 Vintage release

We are pleased to offer the 2018 vintage wines of the cult Burgundy producer Domaine Prieuré Roch. These are some of the most sought after wines in the world and exceptionally rare.

The Domaine was established in 1998 by one of Burgundy’s most notable names, Mr Henri Roch who was also the co-director of Domaine de la Romanée Conti & the grandson of the legendary Henri Leroy.

Prieure Roch farms vineyards in some of Burgundy’s most famous villages having an enviable holding of 14 hectares which include the notable Grand Crus of Clos de Beze & Clos Vougeot. They are also the custodian of two monopoles including the imposing 5.2 hectare Clos de Corvées located in Nuits-Saint-Georges which has a history dating back to the 15th century and Clos Goillote located in Vosne Romanée, a rare .55 hectare plot fifty metres from La Tache and previously owned by Domaine de la Romaneé Conti.

Prieure Roch has been farming with organic viticulture since its inception and produces extremely low yields in all its plots to maximise phenolic and fruit ripeness.

In the winery, they employ natural yeasts for all wines and 100% whole bunch fermentation with traditional punching down. There is no fining or filtering and sulphur is only used in homeopathic doses at bottling. The philosophy of the Domaine is to nurture the vineyards through the season to achieve the best they can under given conditions, not to manufacture wine, but to husband the vines and fruit to maturity, to manage the fermentations out of which the wine is born.

Winemaker Yannick Champ describes the 2018 harvest as one marked by several events most notably the warmth of the vintage and the drought conditions. Unlike many producers in the region who produced abundant crops, the yields were low in many plots for Prieuré Roch with little juice due to evaporation.

Despite these challenges and an increase in natural alcohol levels in some plots Yannick is extremely happy with the quality and the wines are showing good acidity and freshness. He suggests the wines be served at a temperature of 14 to 15 degrees to enhance the freshness and vitality for the ideal drinking experience.

A notable exception is the Domaine chose not to produce any white or rose wines from 2018 due to musts not showing the balance Yannick expects – 2018 is truly a red wine vintage at Domaine Prieuré Roch.
