With purity of color, the Mysterious Diggings Pinot Noir 2021 has aromas of violets, fresh thyme, and red berries. With gracious, silky tannin and a lovely line of acidity, the wine has great energy and freshness, with flavors of blackberry, red cherry, licorice root and a touch of exotic spice. A wine of great purity, the hallmark Bannockburn finish of balanced acidity and a touch of fruit sweetness is both delicious and memorable.

The Mysterious Diggings vineyard, planted in 1999 with six different clones, is one of the highest altitude vineyards in Bannockburn, Central Otago at 300 metres above sea level. The combination of elevation, northern aspect, steep slopes, multiple clones, original rootstock and sandy soils, consistently produces Pinot Noir that is brightly fruited, accessible and delicious at a young age.

Our notes

RESIDUAL SUGAR: <1 g/l = Low Sugar Wine

The nose really draws you in with lifted floral notes and sweet cherry oak spice, showing so much pleasing, delicious pinosity. In the mouth, it’s medium bodied, again with gorgeous cherry-scented Pinot fruit, a touch of forest floor or decaying leaves, a lick of oak and a line of positive upbeat acidity, adding freshness and energy. Outstanding value.. CR

Beautifully styled and immediately appealing on the nose with sweet cherry, mushroom, toasted nut and rich floral aromas. The palate delivers excellent weight and silky flow, splendidly supported by finely integrated tannins. Soothing and comforting.

Producers notes

It started with a map in a dark library and an epiphany. Which led to an Alchemist-like journey to Bannockburn to discover the mysteries of wine and this special place.

A wise man once said, “find the best vineyard sites you can because you can’t out perform your vineyards”. Guided by this wisdom, a process of following the signs, finally led to this far corner of the world, Bannockburn, Central Otago and the Sancta vineyard, home to the first vines planted in Bannockburn.

Once on the migratory path of Maori in search of Pounamu - Bannockburn was settled in 1862 during the gold rush. Felton Road is now a meandering country road of vines, mostly the Pinot Noir for which the region is famed, and orchards. It is also home to the “Mysterious Diggings” created by the gold sluicings from the 19th century gold rush and punctuated with wineries, cellar doors, the bike trail. The best street in New Zealand is also our home base - home to our Terra Sancta Estate vines, cellar door, winery and office, hens, sheep, goats, Hill of Health, Mound of Microbes - it is a vibrant and fascinating corner of the world.
