Ignored for generations, Verduno’s Pelaverga was rediscovered by a group of producers during the 1970s. Today, it is a much-appreciated wine possessing as it does some highly original characteristics and a lovely spicy aroma. The grapes are particularly crunchy and tasty when eaten raw. A typical old Piedmontese wine, grown on the hills of Verduno from where it gets its origin denomination. A light brilliant red color with a pink hint, assuming an orange tinge when aged. A rich and spicy fragrance with a cherry scent when young. A spicy fragrance of white pepper can be detected. Excellent with cured meats, first courses and dishes with mushrooms. It should be consumed at a temperature of 17/18°C.

The Wine Front

The word Verduno is redundant in the name of the wine, because you can’t call it Pelaverga unless it’s from Verduno.

Strawberry, raspberry, white pepper, orange peel, hazelnut. It’s classic Pelaverga, spicy and red fruited, a little earthy with some sappy orange bitterness, firm dusty tannin grip, cinnamon and pepper on a quite bold and juicy strawberry finish of good length. It’s perhaps a bit more grunty and guttural in 2022, though though the signature of grape and region is stamped pretty firmly. Nice.

Producers notes

A natural amphitheatre exposed south-westerly, to the classic afternoon sun, where the particular microclimate exhalts the production of a Barolo wine which is very fragranced and delicate with a balanced body and with soft tannins.

Borgo Castagni is a synonym of Bel Colle, in fact the wine cellar stands in this locality which joins both Verduno and La Morra. They are household vineyards where the vegetative production is controlled and monitored daily by Belle Colle from pruning to gathering. It is exposed towards west-southwest and wines produced on calcareous-clay land with gypsum veining have an olfactory component which is unique for its intensity and persistence joined with an excellent colouring intensity.

We practice sustainable winemaking, with manual harvesting, slow pressing of the grape cluster and balanced maceration. Each phase has the aim of storing and transmitting, in whole, the balance and the harmony of the grapes into the bottle all the way to the glass.
