UK wine writer Jamie Goode offers a pretty incisive introduction to the wines of French winemaker Yves Cuilleron: “In the space of a decade, Yves Cuilleron has established himself as one of the leading lights of France’s Northern Rhone…He is a modernist but not overtly, so his wines straddle neatly the divide between traditionalists and the new-wave, in the sense that they retain their sense of place, but express their site in a slightly more approachable, immediate way. There’s purity to the fruit, and where new oak is used it isn’t excessive."

Our notes

The appellation IGP Collines Rhodaniennes designates that it is made with fruit from Northern Rhone vineyards that sit outside the borders of renowned AC Appelations such as Saint Joseph, Cote Rotie, and Cornas, amidst others. But it feels distinctly Northern Rhone. In fact we think this wine gives as much pleasure as many $50 -$60 dollar examples that occasionally cross our tasting table. That’s not hype, that’s the reality. It’s beautifully crafted by Yves, all hand picked, wild yeasts fermented, with no unnecessary winemaking adds, and just a smidge of oak, capturing all the stunning purity of French Syrah. For the pleasure it gives, the price is compelling.

Producers notes

A constant search for precision
Yves pays extra-special care to the quality of his vines, and rejects “off-the-shelf ideas”. His vision of viticulture is highly personal: not conventional, not organic, and not biodynamic. He has a simple philosophy: “Grow the best possible grapes.”

As our vineyards cannot be mechanised, much labour is required and the vines receive “haute couture” treatment. Careful management of the growth cycle is another hallmark of distinguished savoir-faire. Low vine vigour, leaf-thinning and green harvesting allow maximum ventilation, reduce sensitivity to disease, and improve grape quality. All our grapes are grown to integrated methods and carry no certification labels – in other words, no standards or regulations constrain our conception of wine.

This approach to grape-growing takes the form of respectful manual treatment. We carry out the fewest treatments possible – three to five per year. No insecticides and only small amounts of organic fertiliser define a unique method that deeply respects the balance of our soils. Such consideration is essential, and a prerequisite for a promising future.
