Our notes

It’s fragrant and very inviting on the nose, almost pinot-like. In the mouth it’s medium bodied showing perfumed wild raspberry, red/dark cherries and plum skin nuances balanced by subtle earthy savouriness, serious tannin and gentle spice with oak a distant afterthought. The key here is the quality of the biodynamic viticulture and fruit and the sensitive meticulous winemaking. As always with this wine drink it slowly and give it some air, then look out!  CR

JAMES HALLIDAY'S TOP 100 WINES OF 2020 From vines planted in '45 on a deep sandy dune dubbed ‘The Beach' by Yangarra. Whole bunches are open-fermented. The bouquet exudes fresh-picked raspberries which form the nucleus of the powerful and intense palate, with grainy tannins that underline the complexity of the wine. The vines were planted in 1946. The wine is a steal in 2020. Beautiful fragrance, fruit and structure. It’s light but insistent; it has presence. I guess you’d say that it tastes of redcurrant and plum, gently stewed versions thereof, though saltbush and sweet spice notes gather in number, and there’s an earthen aspect, a suggestion that it’s of the ground. Tannin here; it means business. It doesn’t just sit there; the tannin here takes those fruit and spice notes and brands the finish with where it comes from. $35, in any walk of life, rarely offers that kind of connection; that kind of more. JUST. PERFECT. This wine has an innate balance, a sense of correct acidity, tannins, and flavour working harmoniously. Stepping back a bit, the grapes for this were handpicked, with 50% whole berries in the wild ferment. Matured in old puncheons, foudre and ceramic egg for 11 months. When I try these Yangarra Grenache I straight away think that I must be scoring other wines too high, because these are on a higher tier. In short, it’s the Dustin Martin of Grenache. Dark cherry, a hint of BBQ lamb, the absence of oak allows the fruit to shine and then finished with thick grainy tannins and ‘right’ acidity. The balance, the easiness, the fact that the alcohol is never a thing. Well, it’s just perfect. Those thick-cut tannins! Just magnificent wine. Andrew Graham, ozwinereview.com, 29 October, 2020

A medium red hue, the nose is floral and lifted by red cherry with sweeter earth and spice. There is concentration and drive to dark cherry with a savoury aspect and tannins that build but are fine and compact whilst giving structure. There is a litheness to the fruit and a chalkiness on the back palate with fruit rather than oak or winemaker input the star. The finish is awash with red cherry, gentle earth and faint spice. A wine I can’t wait to see with a few years in bottle.

Producers notes

Yangarra Estate is a biodynamic wine farm in the McLaren Vale region in South Australia. The Yangarra philosophy centres around producing wines solely from its single-vineyard estate and the property is devoted to the best grape varieties of the southern Rhone. Yangarra's combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and cool evening breezes make it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in these moderate maritime environments.

Shipping

Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)

In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").

Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.

For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.
