Valli Waitaki Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018 - Central Otago
Closure: Screw cap
Bottle size: 750ml
Our Waitaki Pinot Noir is like Steve McQueen - dynamic, ethereal and resilient. Jen Parr, Valli Winemaker
Bright garnet hue with vivid fruit aromas of wild strawberry, Morello cherry, and plum married with sage, wild thyme, rose petal and a hint of cedar. The vibrant fruit, floral notes and savoury spice layer wonderfully with silky tannins and creamy texture highlighted by a fresh acidity that gives the wine tremendous energy. The warmer growing season resulted in a solid fruit set and an early start to harvest with all clones delivering brilliant, healthy clusters. Wild red fruit, intense fragrance and electric energy are the hallmarks of Waitaki Pinot Noir and this vintage is no exception, delivering a notably concentrated wine with plenty of cellaring potential.

"This cooler area, in a warmer vintage, has worked a treat with this taut, focused and compact pinot. Fresh red cherries and sappy allure on the nose, moving to a palate that has almost chalky, compact tannins and a very succulent and detailed, fresh finish."
"It’s fabulously perfumed and captivating on the nose, showing dark plum, spiced cherry, floral, dried herb and cedar characters, leading to a deeply flavoured palate that displays outstanding depth and persistency. The wine offers beautiful ripe berry flavours with stylish oak and spicy/savoury undertones, gorgeously complemented by fine, grainy tannins, making it immensely appealing. At its best: 2022 to 2030."
Guiseppe Valli emigrated from an Italian winemaking background to New Zealand in the 1870s. Five generations later great great grandson Grant Taylor continues the family tradition in the Gibbston Valley near Queenstown. Winemaker for Gibbston Valley Wines, Valli is Grant Taylors first release of a wine under his own label.
The aim of Valli is to create premium quality Pinot Noir displaying the variety of characters found in Central Otagos grape growing subregions. Waitaki North Otago is New Zealands newest and most exciting wine growing region. Like Burgundy, the soils are limestone based after only a couple of commercial vintages we are already seeing incredible consistency in the perfume and minerality of the wines. The Waitaki Valley is slightly cooler than Central Otago and should not be cropped as heavily. Consequently Vallis vineyard is close planted at 5000 vines per hectare with new early ripening clones from Dijon and Pommard.
