After hand picking the fruit, we de-stemmed 75%, leaving the rest as whole bunches, then foot-stomped it and left it be. It spent 33 days on skins as it fermented naturally. Then through the basket press and into old French oak barrels. It was left on its lees, untouched, until racking in December 2019. It was bottled in May with a dash of sulphur, but without fining or filtration.

2019 was again a warm and dry vintage like 2018 and one in which those old Grenache bush vines thrived although with much smaller crop levels. It was much dry and pretty warm throughout, leading to smaller berries and thicker skins and, generally speaking, quite gutsy wines. Fortunately dry-grown bush vines fare really well in these intense, rain-free years - they've had a bit of practice over many decades! As in other warm years, like 2017 for example, we made sure we picked on the early side to retain freshness and acidity in the fruit.

Our notes

Some serious winemaking kudos comes through in this beautiful Grenache. In 2019 it’s a blend of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale and Clare Grenache. Sensible picking dates as always with Tonic ensures brightness without any hint of heat or jamminess. Pretty on the nose with swirling red flowers and red berries. Medium weight, elegant, dare I say pinotesque. Lovely, juicy, high toned red cherries and raspberry fruit with an interesting amaro Italianate bitter herb twist and impressive tannin. Bloody good Grenache.

The Wine Front
Not enough Grenache came off the Churinga (Watervale) and Humphries (Sevenhill), so we have an augmentation here via a 50 year old vineyard located in Blewitt Springs, of roughly 60%. It’s done it no harm. It’s maybe the best Tonic Grenache I’ve tasted. Gee, this is very good. It’s pretty, quietly perfumed, bergamot, fresh mint, spice, and red fruits. Clean, clear, precise, with charming grip of what you might call ‘Nebbiolo tannin’, gentle authority, succulence and cool acidity, and the finish is very long, and pure, a little nibble of almond and spiced orange peel as it slides away. Beautifully made. Wonderful wine. Drink : 2020 - 2030

Producers notes

Tonic Wines is a small batch project being undertaken by two friends with similarly nerdy wine habits. Glenn is an experienced winemaker with genuinely practical skills…actually quite a lot of them. Dan’s background is in wine drinking, talking and educating and after a recent stint as a wine-stained cellar hand he now knows about ‘righty-tighty, lefty loosy’ but that’s about it.

We both agree on many things. First and foremost wine should be a delicious drink. It should also be a bit of fun and enjoyed with good friends in a riotous or relaxed setting. We’re also convinced that both Sherry and American football are way cooler than most people give them credit for.

We don’t really believe in boring wine. It’s a waste of time for your senses and deprives you of a memorable experience. Don’t short change yourself; life is too short. Only drink wine that makes you want to have a second glass.

Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)

In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").

Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.

For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.

Our intention is to offer free shipping to as many wine lovers as possible, however, given the geographically vast size of Australia, it is not possible for us to offer free shipping to 100% of postcodes.
