Here is a lovely little wine that literally made us do a double-take when we first tasted it and contemplated the humble asking price. Definitely should give your favourite ‘wine nerd’ friend a bit of a challenge in a blind tasting.  It reigns from the Naoussa region in Northern Greece (Macedonia) and is comprised of Greece’s most renowned red grape Xinomavro with a dash of indigenous grape Mandilaria grown on the island of Santorini.

In any case, the value here for the quality of the wine is through the roof! We taste a lot of wine in the course of doing our jobs and this little beauty seriously impressed us. The winemaker Apostolos Thymiopoulos is a bit of maestro when it comes to Xinomavro and his thoughtful minimal interventionist winemaking shows through here in this contemporary example.

Our Notes: Give it about 15 minutes of air in your glass to open up. It’s 100 % organic/biodynamic, hand-picked, wild yeast fermented and raised entirely in stainless steel so the feel of the medium weight fruit is just lovely yet the tannins from the Xinomavro are quite serious, gently gripping and shaping the delicious cherry/strawberry/raspberry flavours. Many people equate Xinomavro to Nebbiolo and like Nebbiolo there’s always tannin and a dusty spicy savouriness under the primary fruit which gives the wine extra complexity and X factor. Dangerously drinkable and extremely good value!

Producers notes

The Thymiopoulos family has owned vineyards in Naoussa for several generations. Until recently, the family grew grapes and supplied wineries with their fruit. Upon matriculation from The University of Athens oenology program, Apostolos Thymiopoulos returned to his family’s vineyards and began producing wine for his own label, Thymiopoulos Vineyards and the wine was called Ghi kai Uranos (Earth & Sky).

The winery’s first release was with the 2004 vintage, which was a hit across Greece and in Europe. Ghi kai Uranos also caught the attention of influential wine writers such as Nico Manessis and the UK’s Tom Stevenson. As the winery’s capacity grows, the amount of wine available to us will increase as well. Uranos (the US name), is similar in style to a modern Barolo-powerful and concentrated ripe fruit aromas with balanced acidity and tannins.

The beauty of this wine comes from the fact that Apostolos was able to coax out Xinomavro’s better qualities without high levels of acidity and tannin, making it a wine that can be drunk now as well as cellared for at least 10-15 years. Thymiopoulos Vineyards will be a winery to watch as its production grows.

Shipping

Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)

In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").

Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.

For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.

Our intention is to offer free shipping to as many wine lovers as possible, however, given the geographically vast size of Australia, it is not possible for us to offer free shipping to 100% of postcodes.
