Soumah Equilibrio Chardonnay 2018 - Yarra Valley
Closure: Screw cap
Bottle size: 750ml
A dry winter led into a gentle early spring. A very hot November hastened flowering into an abnormally wet December (5 inches more rain than normal). This rain and heat brought humidity but also delivered an abundant water table for the developing berries. December seemed to rain itself out and late summer was dry (3.5 inches less rain than normal), making for a calm harvest. Picking times were mostly normal, fruit were fleshy and juicy with attractive varietal characters.
Nuances of white flower, vanilla and grapefruit combine on the nose with undertones of struck match and toasted hazelnuts. The palate is still youthful with great persistence and tight minerality and is showing excellent structure with fine balance. This wine will evolve over many years to come.
Soumah produces a dizzying number of wines now. Quality is generally good. This was reviewed in February 2020 and was then re-tasted in October 2020; the review was updated following this second tasting.
This is flinty but there’s quality fruit behind. It comes dripping with fresh-cut pear and stone fruit, quince paste, meal and cedarwood but all these characters purr their way through the palate; it’s not a big wine but it has good intensity and a clear, charming elegance to its flow. Indeed it’s one of those wines that lingers on the finish for longer than it fairly should; it just carries that something extra.
Trophy winning wine, vindicated.
This Soumah Equilibrio Chardonnay 2018 took out the award for Chardonnay ‘Best In Show’ at the Decanter Wine Awards.
Now I’m always sceptical about any wine that wins big trophies in very large wine shows, having seen the absolute randomness as an actual judge. But this is undeniably fine Yarra Chardonnay.
Unlike the delicate and lean Soumah single vineyard wines, this is bolder, rounder and more generous, the taut and svelte palate trading in more new oak, more fruit weight and more profondity.
Apricot, peach, cashews and then a ‘no malo here’ fresh finish. It’s made to win trophies this, with a really swish personality, and a notable winemaking stamp. But the push/pull of artifice and fruit makes it a satisfying, high quality wine.
