Shaw + Smith Lenswood Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018 - Adelaide Hills
Closure: Screw cap
Bottle size: 750ml
Sourced exclusively from our Lenswood property. Planted in 1999, the vineyard reaches 500 meters above sea level. The soil is brown loam over clay with some broken shale and stone on the ridges. September’s start to the growing season was warmer than average leading to good canopy and fruit development. January rainfall provided relief from earlier warmer temperatures and was timely to aid fruit development through the ripening period, resulting in healthy fruit being harvested two weeks earlier than average. Grapes were hand picked and hand sorted, before being tipped into open fermentors, either as whole bunches (around 30%) or destemmed whole berries. Long, gentle fermentation and maceration followed, then 10 months in French oak puncheons. Unfiltered and unfined.
From vines planted in 1999, loam over clay and shale, south-facing, Clone 114, and high-density planting of 2380 vines per hectare. Plum skins, bright cherry, withered rose, and light herbal notes from the 30% whole bunch, this is a silky sexy pinot of incredible quality. Super intense, with impressive length. Super stuff…! CR
An exciting lean and lively nose signals this is the type of taut, edgy Pinot Noir that the Adelaide Hills has struggled to capture, despite the region being heavily planted to the variety. This is a model of winemaking restraint, allowing the vineyard to speak, with fleshy cherry and hint of tart mandarin providing a comforting tone, but its firm acidity and ripe, stalky grip ensuring good discipline is maintained in the shape and structure of a svelte flavour profile. decanter.com, August, 2020
From a vineyard planted in '99 at an altitude of 500m, pocked with loam over clay and a shale substrata. This is a richly flavoured pinot, belying the chiffonesque tannins and ethereal glide across the palate. Think root spice, generous red fruit references and forest floor to dill accents. Long and punchy, with a carapace of gentle-but nicely pliant-tannins, guiding it all long. (Ned Goodwin)
