Shaw + Smith Balhannah Vineyard Shiraz 2017 - Adelaide Hills
Closure: Screw cap
Bottle size: 750ml
A complex, finely-textured Shiraz expressing the conditions of each vintage and the character of a unique vineyard site. This is the second release of this wine. The distinctive site has always shown potential for a single site wine, and in this particular year the fruit was outstanding.
From close-planted (5,500 vines/hectare) low yielding vines at Shaw + Smith’s Balhannah Vineyard, planted in 2005. It has a north-facing aspect and the soils are loam over clay, ironstone, quartzite, and shale.
Has the concentration and structure to develop fine tertiary characters in bottle over the next 15 years.
380m vineyard planted in 2005. Loam over clay, ironstone, quartzite, and shale. North facing. Clone Savii17. Density 5555 vines/ha.
Focused black cherry, plum, boysenberry and white pepper spice with some Rhone-like meaty notes and bunchy herbal nuances that are very complex and attractive. Totally stylish wine with incredible silky texture and crafted it seems without any compromise by Adam and team, which I respect. The slight herbal aspects might potentially polarise for some, but I gave a splash to Andrew Corrigan, Master of Wine when he was recently in the store and he immediately went Northern Rhone. He loved it.
Sharp-edged and serious, this raises a very different banner for what Australian Shiraz can be, from a cool, more elevated site. With its snappy bite of stalk and cherry, it suggests the slender refinement of Pinot Noir, but then the mid-palate rounds out with lush red berries and sprinkling of pepper in the tail. The nervy tension of this wine ensures the flavour keeps quivering in your mouth long after the last drop is drained.
A very complex nose with intense red berries, cherries and plums, swathed in complex spice aromas and strong, whole-bunch and oak influence, which combine to drive this to ever more complex heights. The palate has rich, ripe berries, smooth tannins and dark-chocolate flavours in abundance. The smooth tannins are so well crafted. Super fresh and articulate finish. Drink or hold.

Very peppery, spicy, cool-year aromas, very aromatic and whole-bunchy. It's bright, elegant, firm and elegant in the mouth, with fine texture and great persistence. Glorious fragrance and wonderful tension. Sensational shiraz!
It has whole bunch, pepper, meat and mescaline characters splashed all over it. If that’s your thing, rejoice. If not, steer clear. In that style-context this is a terrific wine, full of flare and fruit, threaded intricately with tannin, lengthy, characterful and sophisticated. Hazelnuts and chocolate soaked into black cherry, blueberry and plum. Top shelf quality.
