This wine is from the Shiraz block planted in 2003 with Viognier from the original 2001 plantings. There are two clones in the block, Best’s Old Block sourced from the original plantings at Best’s Great Western in 1868 and clone 1654, a Barossa selection. The Viognier is from cuttings at Yarra Yering, that l cut personally in 2000, Dr Carrodus told me he had personally taken them from Chateau Grillet in Condrieu in the 60’s. Highly illegal at the time…..
The nose is detailed and fragrant, loaded with spicy red and blue fruits and a lick of ginger and spice from the Viognier. Dense and expressive, there is so much going on here; violets and perfume and a heady mix of Asian spice and black pepper.
The palate is layered and woven with super fine savoury but silky tannins. Blue and red fruits, spice, perfume and fragrant, it is finely structured and detailed.. The 2018 has a richness, fleshiness and real volume of fruit, structurally and texturally it reminds of the 2014 and 2015.
The first one hectare of Serrat vineyard was planted in 2001 with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier and a hand full of Grenache vine. In 2002 a second block of one acre was planted with Shiraz and finally our last acre was planted in 2010 with a few unexpected variety of wich you will hear about later.
Our aim is to truly reflect the potential of the Serrat vineyard site in our wine. Therefore, we decided to plant at 8,800 vines/hectare, more than four times the average density. Our vines carry only a few bunches each and on average it takes one vine to produce one bottle.
This is not a new vineyard management concept, but the way that the great vineyards of Europe have been managed for hundreds of years. But it is a lot more work!We believe that each wine is a true representative of the site, the variety, the vintage and what we enjoy drinking. The Serrat site is situated 3 km's from the Yarra Glen township in the heart of the Yarra valley. The site is North facing. The soils are grey to grey brown clays with buckshot gravels evenly dispersed through the topsoil. The subsoil is red-brown clay impregnated with ancient deteriorated mudstones. The soil is low in fertility.Serrat is owned and cared for by Tom and Nadège Carson with the welcome help from Kate Thurgood .
Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)
In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.
The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").
Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.
For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.
