Calabria is located at the ‘toe’ of the Italian peninsula and is characterized by its Mediterranean climate. To the north is the Apennine Mountains forming the border with Basilicata and the Ionian Sea forms the eastern and southern borders. To the west is the Straight of Messina which separates, only just, Calabria from Sicily.

Calabria’s best known wine region is Cirò, extending from the Ionian coast to the eastern foothills of La Sila with the classico zone centred around Cirò and Cirò Marina in the province of Crotone. Here, Gaglioppo is king. One of Italy’s oldest varieties, recent DNA studies have found that Gaglioppo is a natural crossing of Sangiovese and Mantonico. The name Gaglioppo is derived from a Greek word meaning ‘beautiful foot’, owing to its cherubic and plump ripe bunches.

Gaglioppo is a low colour variety and the wines often have an orange tinge, a factor that has, in the past, seen the wines blended with darker varieties such as Cabernet and Merlot. However, with renewed interest in Italy’s native grapes, Gaglioppo is taking centre stage and might just be the next Nerello. Ian D’Agata writes in Native Wine Grapes of Italy that “the best examples of Ciro or any monovarietal Gaglioppo wine, exude aromas of small red berries and citrus zest, with mineral and delicate underbrush notes that are not unlike a lighter, more saline Nebbiolo wine”.

Our notes

Producers notes

Since 1949 a tradition of refinement has handed down from father to son: Luigi Scala now leads the production of Cirò wines in the old winery with great attachment to family traditions. From the growing of grapes to the refinement and ageing of wines, the company takes great care in every step of production, aiming more to the excellency of its final product, a distinguished Calabrian wine, than to the quantity of bottling. The continuance of family tradition and philosophy is also ensured by the recent joining in the company of Francesco Scala as key account manager.

Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)

In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").

Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.

For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.

Our intention is to offer free shipping to as many wine lovers as possible, however, given the geographically vast size of Australia, it is not possible for us to offer free shipping to 100% of postcodes.
