Penley Estate Tolmer Cabernet Sauvignon - Coonawarra
Closure: Screw cap
Bottle size: 750ml
Arguably one of Australia's best value Cabernet Sauvignons from this classic Coonawarra producer!
Iconic Coonawarra producer Penley Estate has seen a radical facelift since the arrival of highly acclaimed [ex-Yarra Valley] winemaker Kate Goodman. She not only is responsible for the more ‘contemporary’ winemaking approach but to a large degree is also directing marketing decisions to a stunning effect. The ’new’ Penley Estate is all about creativity [as the labels testify], enlivening and surprising what wine lovers usually think about what can be achieved in Coonawarra.
Distinctly regional on the nose showing classic Coonawarra notes of blackcurrant, cigar box, scorched earth and subtle whiffs of dried herbs and choc/mint. The palate is medium to full-bodied with lashings of flavour yet there is a sense of control and freshness with chalky tannins and lovely cedar oak making a presence through the finish, adding the structure that will see this wine age for at least another decade.
Kate is a great winemaker, and this is an incredibly good value cabernet sauvignon.
Medium to full-bodied. Distinctly ‘Coonawarra’ on the nose and palate with gentle mint, scorched earth and lovely cassis/plum flavours, the oak definitely contributes but as a distant companion. Impressive! Incredibly good value…
Passion. Spontaneity. Soul. Just a few words that come to mind when we get ready to introduce our winemaker, Kate Goodman.
Kate is one of Australia's best contemporary winemakers. Wineries such as Wirra Wirra ( McLaren Vale), Tim Kanppstein (Clare Valley), Seppelt (Great Western), Punt Road (Yarra Valley) have all benifitted from Kate's brilliance. There is no denial of talent and absolute harmony when it comes to Kate and the winery which we have witnessed each uear since she started in 2016.
Her investment in us is what has fed our evolution into creating some spectacular contemporary varietals. And with the addition of winemaker, Lauren Hansen, it's as though we have taken an almighty breath of fresh Coonawarra air and we are totally inspired.
"It's not about being afraid of failure, that's the only way that you're actually going to make better wine- trying new techniques or working with a variety that's foreign to you. If it doesn't quite work, you can fine tune for next time.
As for the brand, the ideals that we have about becoming really contemporary and progressive... I think we're moving in the right direction. With our Mythology range (home to Phoenix), I want the wines to be both contemporary, but recognisable as Penley. It's always in the back of your mind when winemaking - where is this grape destined to show up?
We need to always remember that the wines we make are the subject of the environment they're grown in, and that we really have to nourish these places. Always remember that wine is a living and breathing beverage. It's not a soft drink produced in a factory. These are really unique and special drinks."
Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)
In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.
The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").
Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.
For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.
Our intention is to offer free shipping to as many wine lovers as possible, however, given the geographically vast size of Australia, it is not possible for us to offer free shipping to 100% of postcodes.
