Paralian Wines Blewitt Springs Grenache 2019 - McLaren Vale

Single vineyard Grenache, fruit sourced from ‘The Marmont Vineyard’ Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale grown by the Cross family.
Dry Grown on Maslin Sand, East/West aspect, 140-145m altitude.
A chance encounter, a block we had never worked with until we started Paralian, but knew through reputation. Based in one of the oldest parts of McLaren Vale. Blewitt Springs sub-region. 2019 is our second release of this single vineyard wine.
Hand-picked fruit, fermented in a 131-year-old wax lined concrete open fermenter, 20% whole bunch, carbonically managed, remainder of fruit destemmed. Exclusively hand plunged over a 25-day ferment. Wine was matured on lees for 9 months in 15 year-old French Oak Puncheons.
The Marmont Grenache had much smaller berries this year and was thicker skinned - as a result we have deeper darker flavours and colour for 2019. The cooler aspect of The Marmont Vineyard is expressed well again with fruit purity very pronounced in the pink to purple fruit zone with green raspberry, five spice, pomegranate and pink lady apple skin. A firmer drive of emery tannin this year with a terrific line of pomegranate flesh and a crispness to its acidity. There is much more strength in this 2019 wine, a more powerful expression for the Marmont Vineyard site.
Lively red berry, particularly raspberry, cinnamon and pink lady apple skin notes lead the aromatics. A graceful ‘Campari’ like spice adds complexity from whole bunch component with a pure line of pink musk. Graceful flow of primary fruits over the palate with a salivating pull of fine tight tannins typical of Blewitt Springs.
Charlie and Skye have achieved an immaculate sense of harmony with this wine which shows a perfect synergy between lovely fruit, wonderful delicate aromatics, savouriness, subtle oak and serious fine tannin. It’s just on medium weight, and there’s not a hint of heat or jamminess which has often plagued this variety in the past, but less and less so these days. Stylistically this beautiful Grenache reminds us of a larger frame and very good Pinot Noir.
We were fresh-faced, aspiring young winemakers tallying up the vintage experiences when we met in 2008 at Hardy’s Tintara in McLaren Vale. A connection was formed over long nightshifts, sneaky midnight coffees and love of all things wine.
Many vintages together followed both here in Australia and abroad, but the pull of McLaren Vale was too great and we gave up the nomadic vintage life to put down some roots.
We found our home in Port Willunga, a seaside town in the McLaren Vale wine region, where the afternoons are long, and the glasses full.
After a collective 46 vintages all over the world it was finally time to make a little wine for ourselves and our long-awaited project Paralian Wines was born.
Choosing specific sites for each variety lead us to the northern reaches of McLaren Vale where old inland seas once were, now leaving beach like pockets where our chosen red varieties, Grenache and Shiraz thrive.
Site and vintage expression is our fundamental belief, working with our growers to ensure quality and ideal ripeness is met with balance and varietal expression in mind. To do more, is to do less.
This is our story, these are our wines, we are - PARALIAN.
