The soil at Serraboella is a calcareous white clay with sandstone. Serraboella is a particularly steep hill facing south-southwest at 280 to 320 meters in elevation. From it, the Pasquero-Elia family produces three Barbaresco – a Serraboella bottling from the larger part of their Serraboella parcel, a Sori Paitin bottling from the most sun-exposed parcel (Sori in Piemontese means the spot of the hill most exposed to sun – where the snow melts first) and an old vine Riserva from the same parcel only in the best vintages.

Hay, freshly cut grass and loam aromas segue to a core of cherry that pulls this together. The sweet fruit handles the burly tannins well, ending in a cascade of eucalyptus and tobacco notes. Best from 2023 through 2043.- B.S.

A powerful cru is Serraboella, and Sorì Paitin is a kind of cru within a cru, if you take my meaning.Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel. Importer: Ethereal Wines. Red fruits, camphor and earth, a dried chamomile and rosehip perfume, aniseed and spice. It’s just over medium-bodied, but powerful in fruit and especially tannin, a lot of grip and crushed rock kind of thing, succulence of red fruit, impressive length, and sense of ‘leave me alone for quite a while’. Tasted : Apr19 Alcohol : 14% Drink : 2023 - 2035+

Producers notes

The Paitin winery, owned by the Pasquero-Elia family, was established in 1796 when Benedetto Elia purchased the farmhouse, wine cellar and surrounding vineyards from Luigi Pelissero. Benedetto’s son Giuseppe acquired the underground cellar and extended their vineyard holdings to the current 17 hectares. In 1893, the first Barbaresco Sori Paitin was produced and in 1898 the winery began exporting the wine commercially. The next important phase of the winery was in 1965 when Secondo Pasquero-Elia built a new wine cellar at the property and did a thorough replanting of the vineyards by massale selection. Secondo is still involved with day-to-day operations of the winery, though it is his sons, Giovanni and Silvano who are currently running the winery along with Giovanni’s son Luca.

In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").

Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.

For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.

Our intention is to offer free shipping to as many wine lovers as possible, however, given the geographically vast size of Australia, it is not possible for us to offer free shipping to 100% of postcodes.
