Our Notes on the 2017 Gattinara:

It is a beautiful hauntingly delicate Nebbiolo with all the finesse you’d expect from Roberto Conterno and this high elevation mountainous region, albeit with a touch more sweet dried cherry infused fruit in the warmer 2017 season which makes it irresistible to drink even now.

There’s also notes of withered rose, aniseed, dried herbs, liquorice with impressive flavour build with air, bright acidity, good length for the level, and a fine lattice of supporting tannin. It’s a blend of four plots including Casacce, Garavoglie and the renowned sites of Molsino and Valferana.

It is fermented in stainless steel prior to 30 months maturation in Stockinger large format Botti. One of the reasons it is so good is that Roberto did not bottle his Cru wines in 2017, with these prized plots going into the standard Gattinara instead. Such is the integrity of this legendary producer. CR

"The 2017 Gattinara is terrific. It will also give readers something to drink without waiting decades. In 2017, the Gattinara is a bit richer than it often is - the result of the warm dry year – but its profile is super-classic. Sweet pipe tobacco, mint, dried herbs, licorice, dried cherry and Alpine herbs fill out its ample frame effortlessly. I would give the 2017 a few years in bottle, but it won’t need more than that to start drinking well. In 2017, Roberto Conterno did not bottle his vineyard-designates. Instead, all the best lots went into the straight Gattinara, an overachieving wine that delivers the goods. I don’t expect the 2017 will be among the most long-lived wines here, but that will hardly be an issue for most readers." - 94 points Antonio Galloni - Vinous

Producers notes

“Roberto Conterno’s acquisition of Nervi in 2018 made waves and has brought a whole new level of interest to Alto Piemonte. I visited just a few months after the purchase was complete and Conterno had already added temperature control to the cellar. Since then, Conterno has built a new winery and added the same state of the art bottling line he has at Giacomo Conterno. The range of wines is now streamlined to three Gattinaras; the straight Gattinara bottling plus the single vineyard Molsino and Valferrana.” ANTONIO GALLONI Vinous, April 2020

Shipping

Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)

In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").

Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.

For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.

Our intention is to offer free shipping to as many wine lovers as possible, however, given the geographically vast size of Australia, it is not possible for us to offer free shipping to 100% of postcodes.
