The Riesling Project: Outside of this earnest, terroirist project amongst pockets of the Yarra Valley, Mac & his team work with Riesling in the Strathbogie Ranges, a place Mac firmly believes has the potential to produce some of the best Riesling in Australia yet, all without showing any of the ubiquitous lime citrus character within the wines of more established Riesling styles.

Over the past 13 years, we have always been overwhelmed by the presence of our Caveat vineyard in the Strathbogie Ranges. A supposedly sealed road that wanders north from Yea climbing to the elevated granite soils that sit 600m above sea level. Generally 5 degrees cooler than the valley floor, this small vineyard is surrounded not by other vineyards but rather unforgiving grazing land. With the often challenging conditions of 2016 (heat and drought) we were once again curious to observe the resilience of these wonderful vines planted in 1983. Unirrigated, they are unrushed and once again delivered fruit of pure dimensions, stunning granite soil influence on the back palate holding line and offering great presence.

Our notes

Pair with Southeast Asian dishes that are both sweet and spicy or tangy. But they can also work wonders with other spicy foods, or salads made with chicken and fruit.

Producers notes

Mac Forbes & the Yarra Valley: For those who haven't tuned in to what Mac & his team have been working on for the past eleven years, Mac's wines are not just built for pleasure, they are, each vintage, a work in terroir. The fruit is picked on the very cusp of ripeness, producing wines that are taut and driven by minerality & soil first and foremost, with fruit character playing a supporting role. These are some of the most serious & engaging wines in the country for anyone who is interested in the question of how one can get a sense of place in a wine.

While just in his 20s, Mac was working as a winemaker under Dr John Middleton at Mount Mary - a considerable job to decide to walk away from. But leaving the Yarra Valley for a few years is potentially what ultimately directed his attention to look at the wine region in a way he hadn’t before. He left his home in the Yarra Valley to work on behalf of Wine Australia in education & consultation in Europe. Upon his return after years of consulting with growers & producers mainly in Austria, Mac felt that he did not have the kind of relationship to his home in the Yarra Valley that the Europeans have to their own sites.

This is at the core of the personality behind the terroirist project of Mac Forbes: rather than spending some time in Europe & returning, earnest to emulate the wine styles of famous European regions (an impossible mission that ends with uninteresting wines), Mac turned his attention to learning now how to relate to his own back yard in the same way that Europeans have been relating to theirs. His project was to learn about what the Yarra Valley is all about. And in doing so, to find a balance between producing the style of restraint & elegance in wines that he values in the world’s great wines and in expressing the characters of the special sites of the Yarra Valley.

Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)

In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").

Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.

For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.

Our intention is to offer free shipping to as many wine lovers as possible, however, given the geographically vast size of Australia, it is not possible for us to offer free shipping to 100% of postcodes.
