Luigi Oddero Barolo 2016 - Piedmont
Bottle size: 750ml
Luigi Oddero and the history of his family have certainly earned the reputation for holding the mantle as one of the more famous producers in the region. As patriarchs of Barolo, the family’s history dates back to 1788 when labels from their Estate were sold and when you step foot in their cellars, the place feels like it’s steeped in history.
They are based in the commune of La Morra, in the frazione of Annunziata with the family owning prime land holdings in the communes of La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga. As one would expect, wines from Luigi Oddero are made as they were many years ago with (at times) lengthy macerations and use of low toast large format oak (sourced from local cooper Gamba) for their top tier DOCG wines.
Perfumed berry, pine-forest, rose and menthol aromas mingle together on this fragrant, stunning red. It's classically crafted, full bodied and loaded with finesse, delivering juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, mint and star anise set against taut refined tannins. It's nicely balanced, with bright acidity and youthful tension. 96 points Kerin O’Keefe - Wine Enthusiast
30% La Morra, 30% Castiglione Falletto, 40% Serralunga. Big old oak. Classic old school style. Importer: Primavera
Good perfume, in with freeze dried strawberry, dried herbs and fresh mint, a handful of nuts and orange peel. Fleshy and red-fruited, some amaro and walnut bitterness, firm tannin with a nut husk grip, maybe some camphor in there from time in old oak, pulls juicy yet bitter on a black tea tannin finish of excellent length. Ultra-traditional and quite stern, though that’s meant in a positive sense.
