One of the rockstars of Languedoc winemaking in the South of France commanding huge admiration and respect from his local peers, Domaine Leon Barral headed by Didier Barral can trace his winemaking heritage back thirteen generations. His 30 hectares of vines in the tiny hamlet of Lentheric within the Faugeres appellation are biodynamically farmed and an unhurried approach to winemaking create stunning wines that are soulful and loaded with character.

The wines are also difficult to obtain so we are pleased to receive and offer our annual allocation of this great French producer. His Faugeres is a blend of  50% Carignan, 30% Grenache, and 20% Cinsault. Raised entirely in cement vats and stainless steel, this full bodied Languedoc beauty is meticulously crafted by Didier and emanates the warmth and sun blessed vineyards of this ancient region.

Our notes

It is an incredible wine of quiet power and surprising elegance for a wine from this French appellation. It has all the sweet dark berry fruit you’d expect from Faugeres but it is also pleasingly savoury with wild garrigue herbs, black pepper spice, ironstone and subtle floral lavender/violet notes adding nuance and prettiness. Producers notes

Didier Barral has 25-hectares of biodynamically-farmed vineyards on slightly acid schist soils in which a little of everything grows. Everything starts from the soil which must be made as healthy as possible. In his words, "Nowadays, farmers feed the planet but destroy it at the same time. Sometimes they think they are doing the right thing by ploughing too often for example, which eventually damages the soil structure. We have to observe nature and to understand how micro-organisms operate. Then we see that tools and machinery can never replace the natural, gentle work of earthworms, insects and other creatures that travel through a maze of tunnels, creating porosity and aerating the soil, making it permeable and alive. There‘s grass in our vineyards and amongst the grass, there are cows and horses: a whole living world that lives together, each dependent on the other and each being vital to the balance of the biotope". This estate is now regarded as one of the two “greats” in the Languedoc.

Didier is a perfectionist in the vineyard and believes in totally natural vinification. Triage is vital for the quality of the grapes which makes or breaks the wine. The fermentation is done with wild yeasts, pigeage is by hand, long macerations are followed by ageing in wood, and the assemblage (all grape varieties are vinified separately) follows eighteen to twenty-four months later. The wines are bottled with no filtering or fining. And how do they taste? Well, they have a magnificent fruity intensity; his aim is to make something irresistible: a bottle of wine that no one would willingly leave unfinished.

Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)

In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").

Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.

For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.

Our intention is to offer free shipping to as many wine lovers as possible, however, given the geographically vast size of Australia, it is not possible for us to offer free shipping to 100% of postcodes.
