Long held in high esteem as one of McLaren Vale’s finest Shiraz plantings, Block 6 Shiraz continues the tradition at Kay Brothers of producing full bodied red wines that have the grace and pedigree to age for decades. Handpicked and fermented in the original open top fermenters, Block 6 Shiraz is a wine of great strength, deep complexity and amazing vibrancy.

The Block 6 vineyard faces east and rows run north south with significant undulation. The vines are cane pruned with the canes wrapped onto the top wire of the low lying trellis. The present 1.5 hectares comprises a corner of red loam, some heavy clay in the middle of the block and gravelly alluvial soils on the lower side. The underlying “South Maslin Sands” geology is extremely complex containing layers of glauconite, limestone, sandstone and siltstone.

From 127 year old vines, eking out 525 six packs. Normally would have been released last October, but now held back for a further six months. Release date is 30 March, 2022.

Liquorice, chocolate, oyster shell, blackberry, a little mint, spice and nutty oak. Deep and concentrated, intense and layered dark fruit and black olive, firm ironstone tannin, such depth and heft, but not really heavy, as such. It’s saline and earthy, toasty sage-like oak in support, fresh blackberry acidity, and a umami finish of superb length and sticky ribs of tannin. So purple. Essence-like. A mighty expression of old vine McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Producers notes

Bordering St.Vincent's Gulf, 40 kms south of Adelaide, the Kay Brothers McLaren Vale Amery Vineyards grace the rolling foothills of the Southern Mt.Lofty Ranges.

Established in 1890 by Australian born brothers Herbert and Frederick Kay the Heritage Listed Kays Amery Winery celebrated its first grape crush in 1895 and is the oldest McLaren Vale winery still in founding family hands with third generation Colin Kay continuing the family winemaking tradition.

The winery is located at the top of a hill 5 kms from the McLaren Vale Township and the Cellar Door, which is part of the original Winery complex, boasts some stunning panoramic views of the surrounding picturesque valleys and hillsides.

The welcome at Cellar Door is as friendly as the view is seductive so allow plenty of time during your visit to taste the renowned selection of traditional premium estate wines and explore the Kay Family diaries dating from 1891. Kay's are specialist traditional red wine makers utilising grapes from their own 22-hectare Amery Vineyard.

The grape varieties grown are Shiraz (including the 1892 Block 6), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, Grenache, Mourvedre (Mataro) and Muscat Blanc. Colin Kay's winemaking philosophy is to make rich fullbodied fruit-driven wines (using the original Open Fermenters and Basket Press) with small oak cask maturation.
