"A Masterpiece..." Dark purple-red. Concentrated black and blue fruits with hints of earth, nutmeg and spicy, savoury oak. Layers of rich, silky dark fruits with some earthy savouriness, smoked meat and liquorice. A long, generous and lively palate defined by polished and persistent tannins.

Eligo is made from the best parcels of the vintage, fermented with submerged caps in small open fermenters, matured for 20 months in French hogsheads (50% new). The tannins and oak are built into the wine like an inlaid checkerboard table created by a master craftsman with decades of experience. Like John Duval.

“Fermentation with submerged cap; up to two weeks on skins, then matured for 18 months in French hogsheads (55% new). Opaque purple; incredible depths to the velvety black fruits that run on oiled stainless steel rails, making it impossible to deny.”

“Very deep, saturated purple/red colour, with a smoky, graphite, charcoal and ironstone bouquet, complex and classic Barossa. The palate adds dark chocolate. The wine is powerful, concentrated, fleshy and dense, with ample tannins that are supple and ripe, contributing to a palate that has impeccable line and length. An outstanding Barossa shiraz, drinking well already but with many years ahead of it.”

“Opaque ruby, it ripples with blackberry, roasted meat, gravy and soy sauce aromas well framed by exceptional quality oak. The palate is a powerhouse of ripe, dark and plush fruits that are forceful, but not overbearing. That fruit sits over a bed of mouthcoating tannins and quite vibrant acidity while retaining a silky mouthful. Structure helps to tighten up the palate keeping focus as layers of Bay leaf and spice come into the frame on a long, seamless finish marked by pinpoint balance. It’s a super vintage of Eligo with twenty years plus ahead of it.”

“The first Eden Valley dominant Eligo (70%) with the Barossa Valley parcel coming from Adrian Hoffmann’s Ebenezer vineyard. From an excellent vintage, this has a very fragrant nose, with fresh roasted spices and a cedary-oak thread that opens to cocoa powder, redcurrants, peaches, pomegranates, blueberries and blackberries. So, so youthful. The palate is very plush, fleshy and long. Flavour-soaked with rich and fresh blackberry and red-plum flavours. Long cellaring life here. An excellent Eligo.”

Producers notes

Welcome to John Duval Wines. After 29 years as a winemaker with Penfolds, one of Australia's most famous wineries, I started my own wine label in 2003. I have had a fortunate career, graduating in agriculture and winemaking in 1973 at Adelaide University and then following in the footsteps of some of the greats of Australian winemaking such as Max Schubert, the creator of Penfolds Grange and Don Ditter, another famous Penfolds winemaker of the 1970s and early '80s.

I guess there was a family precedent to all of this - the Duval family had for many years run a world famous sheep stud and quality vineyards south of Adelaide, coincidentally supplying Shiraz grapes and vine cuttings to Penfolds. So I wasn't exactly a newcomer to wine.

I was appointed Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1986 and was lucky enough to oversee one of the most dynamic periods of change in the Australian wine industry. With the support of my team in the Barossa I secured a number of awards for the company - Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 1989; Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London in 1991 and again in 2000; and seeing the 1990 Penfolds Grange named the Wine of the Year by the prestigious US magazine Wine Spectator in 1995.
