Izway Angelo Aglianico - Barossa Valley
Bottle size: 750ml
One of the more interesting and profound wines we have tried recently. This is beautiful and a great introduction to this alternative Italian variety!
The grape Aglianico has early Greek origins but is championed in Campania in the South of Italy near Naples. Here it makes that region's signature premium DOCG wine known as 'Taurasi'. The wines are always complex and usually deep flavoured with dark brooding fruit shaped by powerful tannins that give Aglianico huge ageing potential.
The brilliant winemakers at Izway in the Barossa make what is arguably the best example of Aglianico in Australia. Happily, the price is very fair for the quality of the wine, especially when you compare it to the prices of Taurasi in Italy.
After a little air a wonderfully complex array of aromas appear from dark cherry, plum, chocolate and rich tar with hints of wild herb and liquorice spice. The palate is smooth, dense and full-bodied yet never tedious of cumbersome showing intense savoury/sweet dark berry flavours that echo the nose alongside complex wild herbs and tar a recurring feature. Despite the apparent weight of the wine, the palate seems alive and energetic with good acidity and robust drying black tea-like tannin typical of Aglianico. You get a sense of finesse with this wine despite the muscle with lingering complexity that keeps you totally engaged. Lovely wine…
Beautiful now this wine will nevertheless cellar for up to 20 years in the right conditions. It is highly recommended!
(Please note this is Izway's premium Aglianico offering the 'Angelo')
The wine is named after Craig’s great mate, and our concreter to the stars, Angelo Bertin. After Angelo and his team did such an outstanding job on our winery and cellar door construction, we thought it only fitting to name a wine after him made from an Italian grape variety!
The 2017 shows off the incredible tannins of the Aglianico grape variety. The smooth texture on the palate and balanced acidity makes this wine a prime candidate for wine and food pairings.
A slightly reductive initial nose of gruyere and blue cheese, disrobes with air to reveal pretty, floral aromatics. Lavender and tar and dark violet crumble, combine with licks of liquorice and cardamom.
Powerful, robust, dry, powdery tannin, juicy and fresh mid pallet. Fine, linear profile with a gutsy finish.
Cellaring: The Angelo can be enjoyed now or can be cellared for up to 20 years.
