Fruit for the 2018 Hutton Triptych Reserve Margaret River Chardonnay was sourced from the Wildberry Springs vineyard in Wilyabrup. The Gin Gin clone grapes were hand picked in February, chilled overnight, then gently whole-bunch pressed.

The free run juice and light pressings were fermented naturally with wild yeasts in French barriques (50% new) and malolactic fermentation was encouraged in selected barrels. The wine was matured for 8 months in barrel with regular battonage. Bottling was in December and 101 cases were produced.

Our notes

"Tried over several hours. At this early stage in its life I recommend a good decant if drinking now. Stunning chardonnay from start to finish. Remarkable intensity of crystalline focused Chardonnay fruit showing white peach, nectarine, and grapefruit married to high quality French oak. Some faint almond fills out the mid palate with laser like tingling lemony acidity keeping this beautiful chardonnay driving long through the finish." CR.

Light gold colour. This is a very unusual and sophisticated Margaret River Chardonnay which is a mix of Gingin clone (72%) and Clone 5 (28%). In fact, tasted blind you could easily think this Chardonnay came from somewhere in Victoria because of the acid line. It is very lean and restrained but given some time in the glass nicely nuanced notes of lime citrus, white stonefruit, fennel, almond paste and nougat emerge all tightly wrapped around a core of minerally acidity. There is a hint of matchstick and like the Triptych Chardonnay it has undergone a partial malo. The oak treatment is slightly less obvious but again adds complexity. The finish on the Reserve just goes on and on and is very precise. Michael Hutton’s Chardonnays cellar well and though drinking well now, this should be even better after a few years in the cellar. 96+

Producers notes

"I love wine. I love making it, drinking it, buying it and selling it. I love the crisp crack of a screwcap being twisted off a bottle, and the gurgling sound it makes being poured. Most of all I love the sweet anticipation of what lies before you in the glass. Thinking about it, it's not hard to understand how this came to be. In 1975 when I was 6 years old, my parents planted vines on the family cattle farm in Margaret River, and in 1978 made their first wines.

School holidays and weekends were often spent helping out in the vineyard and winery, and sampling the finished product when no one was looking. After studying architecture in Perth and many years away, I returned to the area in 2005 and made 2 barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon in 2006, which was the birth of Hutton Wines.

The rest as they say, is history. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is sourced from the Wildberry Springs Estate vineyard in Wilyabrup to make the ‘Graffiti’ and 'Triptych’ series. ‘Graffiti’ is a fun introduction to the classic varieties of Margaret River whilst the ‘Triptych’ Estate and Reserve wines are the finest expression of vineyard and vintage. I hope you enjoy these wines and share the love."

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").
